Overview

Shōbōji is a historic Buddhist temple situated on Mount Iwadono in Higashimatsuyama, Saitama Prefecture. It is a member of the Bandō Sanjūsankasho, a pilgrimage circuit of thirty-three temples dedicated to Kannon Bodhisattva. The temple is known as the 'Iwadono Kannon' and is recognized for its connection to the Heian period. The main hall houses a wooden statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon, the temple's primary object of worship. The grounds are characterized by mature forested slopes and ancient stone stairs leading toward the temple structures. The temple grounds feature a prominent observation deck that provides a panoramic view of the Kanto Plain. It functions as the tenth stop on the pilgrimage route.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, non-slip walking shoes as the temple grounds include stone staircases and uneven paths.

Check the weather before visiting, as the observation deck offers the best views on clear, non-hazy days.

Bring a pilgrimage stamp book (shuincho) if you intend to collect calligraphy stamps from the resident monks.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to hike to the temple in standard city dress shoes or heels due to the steep, uneven terrain.

Etiquette

Remove shoes when entering temple halls, maintain a quiet volume, and do not photograph the interior statues.
