Overview

Zaō-dō Hall is the main hall of Kinpusen-ji, the headquarters of the Shugendō mountain ascetic tradition in Japan. It is the second-largest wooden structure in Japan, surpassed in size only by the Daibutsu-den at Tōdai-ji. The building stands 34 meters tall and was reconstructed in its current form in 1591. The interior houses three massive, blue-skinned Zao Gongen statues that are considered the physical embodiment of the mountain deity. These statues are periodically displayed to the public during special viewing periods. The temple complex is a significant pilgrimage site situated on the slopes of Mount Yoshino. The hall's architectural design features a distinct layered roof structure supported by massive natural cedar columns.
