Overview

Seven Magic Mountains is a large-scale public art installation by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone featuring seven towers of stacked, neon-painted boulders. The installation stands more than 30 feet tall and is composed of locally sourced limestone. It is situated in the Ivanpah Valley, approximately 25 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip. The artwork was commissioned by the Art Production Fund and the Nevada Museum of Art. The installation debuted in 2016 and remains on display in the Mojave Desert. The site occupies a remote location in the desert landscape, accessible via S Las Vegas Blvd. The boulders are painted in vibrant, contrasting colors to provide a stark juxtaposition against the natural muted desert backdrop.

Insider tips

Wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from desert terrain and prickly vegetation.

Bring plenty of water, as the remote location lacks hydration stations or amenities.

Visit on a weekday to avoid the heavy weekend crowds that can make unobstructed photos difficult.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk through the desert heat without adequate water; avoid visiting during peak midday heat in summer months.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect the surrounding desert ecosystem and do not climb, deface, or paint the boulders.
