Overview

The Rewari Heritage Steam Loco Shed is the only surviving steam locomotive shed in India and serves as a working depot for heritage locomotives. It houses a collection of vintage steam engines, some of which date back to the 19th century and are still periodically operated for films and special charters. The facility functions as a living museum where visitors can observe the maintenance of steam-era technology. A locomotive simulator is available on-site, providing a virtual experience of operating a train. The shed features a turntable, a rare piece of railway engineering equipment still in functional condition. Many of the locomotives maintained here are featured in prominent Bollywood period films. The site is managed by Northern Railway and serves as a preservation site for steam-age industrial heritage.

Insider tips

Bring a hat and sunscreen as much of the shed area is outdoors and exposed to the sun.

Check in advance if a locomotive is currently undergoing maintenance, as this provides the best view of internal engine parts.

Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes to navigate the gravel and industrial workshop terrain.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb on engines unless explicitly permitted by staff, as many parts are fragile or covered in industrial lubricants.

Etiquette

Avoid touching the grease-heavy engine components; follow all safety barriers near active workshop areas.
