Overview

Devil's Punchbowl Preserve is a 5-acre geological site featuring a deeply carved sandstone amphitheater created by natural erosion. The preserve is managed by the Landmark Conservancy and is located in Dunn County, Wisconsin. A spring-fed waterfall flows from the top of the sandstone cliffs into a small pool at the base. The site contains a wooden staircase that allows visitors to descend into the basin to view the exposed geological strata. Rare ferns, including the Lapland rosebay and cold-climate mosses, thrive in the microclimate found at the bottom of the gorge. The preserve protects a unique environment where temperatures remain significantly lower than the surrounding forest floor. It is designated as a state natural area due to its distinct sandstone geology and botanical diversity.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy footwear with good traction, as the wooden stairs and surrounding trails can be slippery when wet.

Bring insect repellent, as the cool, damp environment in the basin attracts mosquitoes and ticks.

Stay on the designated trails and stairs to protect the fragile sandstone walls and rare plant life.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to scramble up or down the cliff faces outside of the provided staircase, as the sandstone is highly friable and prone to erosion.

Good to know

Open year-round, but stairs may be closed or extremely hazardous during winter months due to ice accumulation.

Etiquette

No climbing on the sandstone walls; remove all trash to preserve the ecosystem.
