Overview

Kitano Tenmangu is the head shrine for approximately 12,000 Tenmangu shrines across Japan dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a 9th-century scholar and politician. The site is uniquely celebrated as a center for academic achievement and successful test outcomes. The complex features a distinct architectural style known as Hachiman-zukuri, characterized by two parallel gabled roofs joined at the gutters. Over 2,000 plum trees, planted by Michizane himself according to legend, create a renowned floral display in late winter. The shrine grounds house the Treasure Hall, which preserves national treasures including the Kitano Tenjin Engi Emaki scrolls. A bronze bull statue occupies the main plaza, symbolizing the legend that a bull protected Michizane during his exile. Every month on the 25th, the shrine hosts a large flea market known as Tenjin-san. It is a designated National Treasure site of Japan.
