Overview

Red Rock Canyon Open Space features 1,474 acres of public land characterized by dramatic Fountain Formation sandstone hogbacks. The landscape includes a network of over 15 miles of trails designated for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The park contains a variety of geological features, including uplifted vertical rock fins and distinct sedimentary layers. A dedicated off-leash dog area is located near the main parking lot. The area served as a historical gypsum quarry in the early 20th century, and remnants of this industrial activity are still visible. The trails connect to the broader regional trail system, including access toward the Palmer Trail. The canyon provides habitat for mule deer, red-tailed hawks, and occasionally black bears. It operates as a designated open space under the management of the City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services.

Insider tips

Bring significantly more water than you expect to need, as the high desert environment and exposed sandstone ridges cause rapid dehydration.

Download an offline map, as cell service is inconsistent throughout the canyon floor and behind the rock ridges.

Utilize the north or south parking lots during peak weekends, as the main entrance lot fills to capacity quickly.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to scramble up the vertical sandstone hogbacks, as the rock is highly friable, unstable, and dangerous.

Etiquette

Stay strictly on marked trails to protect fragile biological soil crusts and prevent erosion; leashed dogs are required outside the designated off-leash area.
