Overview

Bourscheid Castle is the largest medieval castle in Luxembourg, strategically situated on a rocky promontory 150 meters above the Sûre River. The site features a combination of original 10th-century stone structures and later Gothic modifications. Visitors can explore the Stolzemburg House, the guardhouse, and several restored defensive towers. An integrated audio guide system provides historical context for the architectural evolution and the castle's role in regional power struggles. The castle has been under a long-term restoration program since its acquisition by the Luxembourg state in 1972. It features an extensive outer curtain wall fortified by eight towers. The site remains partially open-air, requiring visitors to traverse uneven stone surfaces and open courtyards.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes to navigate the uneven stone floors and steep paths.

Bring a light jacket as the high altitude and stone structure create cooler temperatures even on sunny days.

Check the weather beforehand, as the outdoor nature of the site makes it less enjoyable during heavy rain.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb on top of the restored wall sections, which is prohibited for safety reasons.

Good to know
