Interesting facts
1

The basalt columns at Racoș are the result of volcanic activity that occurred approximately 1.5 million years ago.

2

The unique hexagonal shape is a product of columnar jointing, where the basalt contracts into polygonal patterns as it cools.

3

The site was once an active scoria quarry, which accidentally exposed the underlying basaltic pillars for public viewing.

4

The geological reserve is situated near the Olt River, which has significantly shaped the local landscape over time.

5

The area is part of a larger volcanic complex that includes nearby volcanic crater lakes and other pyroclastic deposits.

Overview

The Racoș Basalt Columns are a protected geological reserve in Brasov County, Romania, featuring vertical, hexagonal-shaped volcanic rock formations. These basaltic prisms were created by rapid cooling of lava flows resulting from past volcanic activity in the Perșani Mountains. The columns are situated within an old, abandoned quarry that exposes diverse geological strata, including reddish volcanic scoria. This site provides clear insight into the Quaternary volcanic processes of the region. The columns stand at heights of approximately 10 to 15 meters.

Insider tips

Wear hiking boots with good grip as the terrain inside the quarry is uneven and loose.

Bring a hat and sunscreen as there is very little shade within the open quarry walls.

Check the stability of the terrain before climbing, as loose rocks are common near the base of the columns.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to scale the vertical columns, as the rock can be unstable and crumbly.

Good to know

The site is publicly accessible throughout the year, but may become inaccessible during heavy snow or mud in late winter.

Etiquette

Do not collect or remove rock samples from the protected reserve area.
