Interesting facts
1

The lake occupies a maar, which is a shallow volcanic crater caused by a phreatomagmatic explosion where magma meets groundwater.

2

The sediment layers at the bottom of the lake provide a historical record of climate change in the region spanning thousands of years.

3

The water column is meromictic, meaning the layers of water do not mix, creating a distinct chemical profile at different depths.

4

It was featured in the French film 'The Chorus' (Les Choristes) as a scenic backdrop.

Overview

Gour de Tazenat is a circular crater lake formed by a maar, a volcanic explosion that occurred approximately 30,000 years ago. It sits in the northern part of the Chaîne des Puys in the Auvergne region of France. The lake is nearly perfectly circular with a diameter of about 700 meters and reaches a maximum depth of 66 meters. The surrounding landscape consists of forested slopes that rise up to 90 meters above the water surface. It is a protected site under the Natura 2000 network due to its unique geological and biological significance. A hiking trail circles the perimeter, offering varied elevations and vantage points of the water. The lake is fed primarily by rainwater and groundwater springs. It is one of the northernmost volcanic features in the regional park.
