It is located on the northern bank of the Kollidam River near the confluence of the Kaveri. The temple features a five-tiered rajagopuram and is historically significant for its architectural links to the Chola dynasty. Legend suggests that the deity was worshipped by Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana. The presiding deity, Vadivazhagiya Nambi, is depicted in a reclining posture, also known as Bhujangasayanam. The temple is mentioned in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, a collection of Tamil hymns composed by Alvars. The site encompasses two main prakarams, or enclosures, containing various sub-shrines.
