Overview

Mount Tsukuba is a 877-meter-high mountain known for its distinct twin peaks, Nantai and Nyotai. It is part of the Tsukuba-san Shrine grounds and has been a site of mountain worship for centuries. The mountain is accessible via a cable car running to the Nantai peak and a ropeway reaching the Nyotai peak. Vegetation changes significantly from the base to the summit, transitioning from oak and maple forests to Japanese beech. The mountain is part of the Suigo-Tsukuba Quasi-National Park. Quartz diorite and granite are the primary geological compositions of the peaks. Panoramic views from the summits include the Kanto Plain and occasionally Tokyo Skytree or Mount Fuji on clear days.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear, as the stone paths on the summit trails can be uneven and slippery.

Bring a windbreaker even in summer, as temperatures at the peaks are significantly cooler than at the base.

Use the cable car or ropeway for one direction to conserve energy while still experiencing the summit trails.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike all trails in standard street shoes or failing to check the cloud cover at the summit before ascending.

Good to know

Cable car and ropeway operations may be suspended during extreme weather or high-wind conditions.

Etiquette

Maintain silence near shrines, carry out all trash, and stay on marked trails to protect the mountain ecosystem.
