Overview

Gokuraku-ji is a Shingon Risshu Buddhist temple originally founded in 1259 by the high-ranking priest Ninsho. It serves as the only temple of the Shingon Risshu sect within the Kamakura area. The temple grounds are noted for a secluded garden environment and a traditional wooden gate. It is the 22nd temple on the sacred pilgrimage circuit of the 33 Kannon temples in Kamakura. Historically, the temple complex was significantly larger than its current footprint, encompassing numerous sub-temples in the 13th century. It remains an active place of worship rather than a highly commercialized tourist site.
