The 'Senbonzakura' name literally translates to 'one thousand cherry trees'.
The planting project began in 1989 to commemorate the centennial of the town of Miyagi, which later merged into Maebashi.
The elevation of the site is approximately 500 meters above sea level.
The flower garden includes over 150,000 moss phlox plants.
The site experiences a temperature lag compared to central Maebashi due to its position on the mountain slope.
Akagi Nanmen Senbonzakura features a 1.3-kilometer road lined with approximately 1,000 Yoshino cherry trees planted at the southern foot of Mount Akagi. The site was selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. Beyond the spring bloom, the area contains a flower garden featuring Shibazakura (moss phlox) that carpets the ground in shades of pink, white, and purple. The elevation provides views overlooking the Kanto Plain. During the cherry blossom festival, the trees are illuminated in the evening. The site serves as a park space with designated walking paths for visitors. Fall foliage colors are present due to the surrounding forested slopes of Mount Akagi. It is managed by the city of Maebashi to preserve the rural landscape.
The archway created by the overlapping cherry tree branches along the main road.
Check the official Maebashi tourism website for daily bloom status before traveling, as the peak window is short.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the 1.3-kilometer stretch requires significant walking.
Bring a light jacket, as the mountain-base location can be significantly cooler than the city center.
Visiting on weekends during the peak bloom if you prefer to avoid high pedestrian congestion.
Open seasonally; the park is most active during the spring flower festival periods in April and May.
Do not climb the trees or pick the blossoms; stay on marked pathways to protect the flower beds.
