Overview

Canaveral National Seashore protects 58,000 acres of barrier island, open lagoon, and estuary, representing the longest stretch of undeveloped public coastline in Florida. It provides a vital nesting ground for loggerhead, green, and leatherback sea turtles. The park encompasses the northern portion of Mosquito Lagoon, one of the most diverse estuaries in North America. Its geography separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Indian River Lagoon system. The seashore remains free of high-rise development, maintaining a primitive barrier island ecosystem. Visitors access the park via the Apollo District in the north or the Playalinda District in the south. The two districts are not connected by road through the park. It shares a boundary with the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Kennedy Space Center.

Insider tips

Bring all necessary supplies, including water and food, as there are no concessions or stores within the park boundaries.

Check the NASA launch schedule, as park access can be restricted or heavily congested during rocket launches.

Use designated boardwalks to access the beach to prevent erosion of the fragile dune vegetation.

What to avoid

Attempting to drive between the Apollo and Playalinda districts through the park, as no through-road exists.

Good to know

The park remains open throughout the year but may close temporarily during severe weather events or scheduled space launches.
