Overview

The Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral is the largest Bulgarian Orthodox church in Varna and the second-largest in the country. Completed in 1886, the cathedral was built to commemorate the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Its architecture is heavily influenced by the Peterhof Palace in Saint Petersburg, featuring a distinctive Neo-Byzantine style. The interior is characterized by its extensive collection of wood carvings, including the episcopal throne and the iconostasis. Extensive mural paintings cover the walls, following traditional Orthodox iconography. The cathedral is noted for its golden domes, which were fully regilded during a major restoration project completed in 2001. A clock tower, added in the early 20th century, remains a central feature of the city's skyline.
