Overview

Petra is an archaeological site in southwestern Jordan famous for its rock-cut architecture and intricate water conduit system. The city served as the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom, carved directly into vibrant red, white, and pink sandstone cliffs. Access to the main city center is via the Siq, a narrow, winding gorge spanning over one kilometer. The Treasury, or Al-Khazneh, is the most iconic structure, featuring a facade heavily influenced by Hellenistic architecture. The site encompasses over 264 square kilometers, containing tombs, temples, and a Roman-style amphitheater. The Nabataeans engineered complex dams and cisterns to survive in the arid desert environment. Many structures remain partially buried or eroded by seismic activity and flash flooding. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985 and was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, broken-in hiking boots as you will walk over 10-15 kilometers on uneven, sandy, and rocky terrain.

Carry at least two liters of water per person, as shade is extremely limited once you pass the main gorge.

Start your visit at the earliest possible entry time to avoid the peak heat and the largest crowds from tour groups.

What to avoid

Avoid taking rides on donkeys or camels from aggressive touts, as it causes animal distress and is often overpriced.

Etiquette

Dress modestly by covering shoulders and knees; refrain from climbing or sitting on ancient carvings or fragile surfaces.
