Overview

Tokyo-wan Kannon is a 56-meter-tall concrete statue of the Buddhist deity Kannon, completed in 1961 by Usami Masayuki to promote world peace and commemorate the dead of World War II. The structure is built on the Oigami Mountain in Futtsu, offering an elevated perspective of Tokyo Bay and the Miura Peninsula. Visitors can climb a 314-step spiral staircase inside the statue to reach observation windows located at various levels, including the head of the goddess. The internal walls are lined with 20 small statues representing the different manifestations of Kannon. The base of the statue features a museum-like space displaying religious artifacts and historical photographs of the construction. It is managed as a private religious site rather than a public park. The surrounding hillside is forested, providing a secluded atmosphere overlooking the industrial and maritime activities of the bay.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, non-slip footwear as the interior staircase is steep and narrow.

Bring a light jacket, as the observation windows are exposed to strong winds from Tokyo Bay.

Check local weather reports before visiting, as visibility of the bay is significantly reduced during heavy fog or rain.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the climb if you have mobility issues or a fear of confined, high-altitude spaces.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet volume inside the structure out of respect for the religious nature of the site; refrain from eating or drinking during the climb.
