Overview

Glimmingehus is Scandinavia's best-preserved medieval fortified stone house, built between 1499 and 1506 by the Danish knight Jens Holgersen Ulfstand. Located in Scania, it represents late-Gothic architecture and was designed to showcase power and prestige rather than merely serve as a military defense. The structure features thick granite walls and advanced defense mechanisms like murder holes, boiling liquid chutes, and double drawbridges. Unlike typical castles, it served as a private residence for the Ulfstand family for generations. The site is currently managed by the Swedish National Heritage Board. It houses a museum focusing on medieval life, archeological excavations, and historical crafts.
