Overview

Revdanda Fort is a 16th-century Portuguese fortification situated at the mouth of the Kundalika River in Maharashtra. Built in 1558 by Portuguese Captain Soeiro de Sousa, it served as a significant military and trade outpost along the Konkan coast. The fort’s remaining structural elements include portions of the massive outer perimeter walls and a prominent watchtower facing the Arabian Sea. It was eventually captured by the Maratha Empire under Peshwa Baji Rao I in 1740. The area inside the ramparts now contains a small village and remnants of religious structures, blending colonial-era ruins with contemporary local life. Its strategic location allowed the Portuguese to monitor naval traffic entering the creek and the port of Chaul. The site remains a protected monument, though much of the original interior has been repurposed for modern housing and agriculture.
