Overview

The Millennium of Russia monument is a bronze sculptural ensemble erected in 1862 to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of Rurik's arrival in Novgorod. Standing 15.7 meters tall, the structure resembles a bell or a medieval orb, symbolizing the consolidation of Russian lands. It features 128 bronze figures divided into three tiers: the upper tier displays an angel blessing a kneeling woman, the middle tier depicts significant figures in Russian history, and the lower tier showcases prominent cultural and military leaders. Mikhail Mikeshin designed the monument, which incorporates elements of the Neo-Byzantine style. It is located within the grounds of the Novgorod Kremlin, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The monument survived an attempt by Nazi forces to dismantle and transport the bronze sections to Germany during World War II. It was reconstructed and returned to its original plinth in 1944. The monument serves as a national historical record cast in metal.
