Overview

Saint-Lazare Cathedral is a major site of Burgundian Romanesque architecture, commissioned by Bishop Étienne de Bâgé in the 12th century. The structure is world-renowned for the Tympanum of the Last Judgment, sculpted by Gislebertus. The cathedral served as a critical stop for pilgrims traveling on the route to Santiago de Compostela. The interior features complex, historiated capitals that depict biblical stories and moral allegories. Many of the original stone carvings are now housed in the adjacent Musée Rolin to preserve them from environmental degradation. The building retains its original 12th-century core despite later additions, including a 15th-century spire and Gothic modifications. It functions as a co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Autun.
