Overview

Kumagawa-juku served as a vital post town on the Saba-kaido, or Mackerel Road, which connected the coastal port of Obama to Kyoto during the Edo period. It is one of the few surviving post towns that maintains its historical streetscape, featuring traditional wooden machiya houses with distinctive mud-plastered walls and tiled roofs. The village is situated along the former trade route that supplied the Kyoto Imperial Court with fresh seafood, particularly salted mackerel. Many buildings still feature the original latticework and traditional architectural details typical of the mid-Edo to Meiji periods. The town layout retains its narrow, winding path designed to control wind flow and hinder swift military advancement in earlier eras. Water channels, known as yusui, still run along the sides of the streets, reflecting an ancient infrastructure design meant to provide water for fire prevention and daily chores.

Insider tips

Walk the entire length of the main street to see the varying architectural styles of the merchant homes.

Visit the local archive center for maps that identify which buildings are original versus reconstructed.

Carry comfortable walking shoes as the stone-lined paths can be uneven.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to drive through the narrowest sections of the historical street, as roads are extremely tight and parking is limited to designated zones.

Etiquette

Respect the privacy of residents; many of the traditional houses are private homes and not open to the public.
