Overview

Kinchakuda is a unique flatland area in Hidaka, Saitama, naturally formed by a sharp 180-degree meander of the Koma River. The site is world-renowned for its massive colonies of Lycoris radiata, or red spider lilies, which cover the forest floor every autumn. The name 'Kinchakuda' translates to 'money purse rice field,' referencing the site's distinct shape resembling a traditional Japanese drawstring pouch. Spanning approximately 22 hectares, the area features preserved wetlands, agricultural fields, and walking trails along the riverbanks. During the peak blooming season, over five million red spider lilies create a dense crimson carpet beneath the canopy of cedar and chestnut trees. The Koma River provides a natural boundary that creates a secluded microclimate for native flora and fauna. Throughout the year, the area functions as a recreational park for nature walks and picnics. It is located at an altitude of approximately 50 meters above sea level. The site maintains a rustic, rural character with minimal modern infrastructure to protect the ecosystem.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes as the terrain consists of unpaved forest paths and riverside trails.

Carry out all trash, as there are very limited waste disposal facilities on-site to maintain the natural environment.

Bring mosquito repellent during the warmer months, especially when venturing near the riverbank.

What to avoid

Visiting mid-October or later if hoping to see the spider lilies, as the bloom cycle is extremely brief and localized.

Good to know

The park remains open year-round, but specific entry fees and crowd-control measures are strictly enforced only during the mid-autumn blooming season.

Etiquette

Do not step off marked trails or into flower beds to protect the sensitive bulb root systems.
