Overview

Nishi Park is Sendai's oldest public park, established in 1875, and is officially recognized as one of the '100 Best Urban Green Spaces in Japan.' The park is situated on a plateau overlooking the Hirose River, providing natural elevation over the city center. It is heavily planted with over 200 cherry trees, including varieties such as Somei-yoshino, making it a primary destination for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in Sendai. The grounds contain the Sendai City Museum of Literature and several historic stone monuments. A distinct feature is the 'Dake-doro' stone lantern, gifted by the Date clan to celebrate the restoration of the Tōshō-gū Shrine. The park serves as a central hub for the Sendai Aoba Festival held annually in May.

Insider tips

Bring a portable mat if visiting during the spring, as local custom involves sitting on the ground for cherry blossom picnics.

Explore the walking paths along the cliff edge for uncrowded views of the Hirose River.

Check the local bloom forecast in early April, as peak flowering periods vary annually.

What to avoid

Do not wander near the cliff edges, as the terrain is rugged and steep.

Etiquette

Take all trash with you as there are limited public waste bins; maintain quiet near residential zones bordering the park.
