Overview

State Castle Libochovice is a prominent Baroque chateau situated on the left bank of the Ohře River in the Ústí nad Labem Region. Originally a Gothic fortress, the site was reconstructed into its current early Baroque form by architect Antonio della Porta between 1683 and 1690. The interior features preserved 17th and 18th-century stuccowork, tapestries, and an extensive collection of historical glassware. The chateau is birthplace to the world-renowned physiologist Jan Evangelista Purkyně, to whom a dedicated exhibition is maintained. The estate is surrounded by an expansive English-style park and a French-style terraced garden featuring a historic greenhouse. The architectural design includes an internal courtyard and highly decorated representative halls on the first floor. Restoration efforts over the last century have focused on maintaining the authentic Baroque aesthetic of the building's facade and ornamental interiors.
