Interesting facts
1

The church was saved from total collapse because the foundation was built on one of the few high-elevation points in the former village.

2

During the winter, the reservoir often freezes, creating a unique, albeit dangerous, ice bridge to the island.

3

The island is officially known as a 'Sunken Church' island and remains one of the most photographed landmarks in the Kyiv region.

4

Local restoration efforts were largely funded by private donors and church supporters, rather than state initiatives.

5

The original village of Gusyntsi was almost entirely wiped off maps after the reservoir's water levels were raised.

Overview

The Spaso-Preobrazhensʹka Tserkva is a solitary Ukrainian Orthodox church located on a small, man-made island within the Kaniv Reservoir. It is the only surviving structure of the village of Gusyntsi, which was deliberately flooded in the 1970s during the creation of the reservoir. The church was constructed in 1822 by the local landowner Gusynsky. Following decades of abandonment and submersion, the building underwent extensive restoration that concluded around 2011. Access to the island is exclusively via watercraft, typically private boats or organized tourist excursions from Rzhyshchiv. The architecture reflects the Ukrainian Classicism style with distinct rotunda elements. The structure serves as a pilgrimage site and a poignant symbol of the region's lost submerged settlements.

Insider tips

Bring waterproof bags for your belongings, as boat boarding can be splashy.

Carry drinking water and sun protection, as there is zero shade on the small island.

Coordinate your boat transport in advance, as there is no regular ferry schedule.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to reach the island by swimming, as the current and depth of the reservoir are unpredictable.

Good to know

Access is highly dependent on weather conditions and water levels in the reservoir; often inaccessible during high-wind storms.

Etiquette

Dress modestly covering shoulders and knees; remove hats inside the sanctuary.
