Overview

Takino Suzuran Hillside Park is the only national government park in Hokkaido, spanning 400 hectares of hilly landscape in the southern outskirts of Sapporo. The park is segmented into four distinct zones: the Keiryu Zone, the Center Zone, the Takino Forest Zone, and the Country Garden. It features a diverse range of seasonal flora, including thousands of tulips in spring and sunflowers in summer. During winter, the park transforms into a dedicated snow park providing opportunities for cross-country skiing, tubing, and snowshoeing. The Keiryu Zone contains four waterfalls, including Ashiribetsu Falls, which is recognized as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan. The terrain utilizes the natural topography of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park periphery. Various recreational facilities, such as the Children's Valley and golf courses, are integrated into the forested landscape. A network of walking trails connects the disparate zones throughout the hilly environment.

Insider tips

Rent a bicycle at the park entrance, as the vast distance between the Keiryu and Center zones can be difficult to traverse on foot.

Check the park's official bloom calendar before visiting to time your arrival with the peak of the tulips or lavender.

Wear sturdy hiking boots or comfortable walking shoes, as the park is situated on hilly, uneven terrain.

What to avoid

Attempting to walk between all four zones without a map or local transport, as the park is significantly larger than a standard urban city park.

Good to know

Etiquette

Carry out all trash as there are limited public bins; remain on marked trails to protect the natural vegetation.
