Overview

Kumatani-ji is the eighth temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, situated on the slopes of Mount Kumatani in Awa, Tokushima. It is known for its steep stone stairway leading to the main hall, which is dedicated to the Thousand-Armed Kannon. The temple grounds contain a notable tahoto pagoda, a architectural style characterized by a square base and a cylindrical upper level. The main hall is accessible via a path through a dense cedar forest, contributing to its secluded atmosphere. As part of the pilgrimage, the temple serves as a waypoint for henro pilgrims traveling between temples seven and nine. The current temple structures are reconstructions following historical fires, though they maintain traditional architectural forms consistent with the Shingon sect.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy walking shoes, as the approach involves a steep stone staircase.

Bring a personal stamp book (nōkyōchō) if you wish to collect calligraphy seals from the temple office.

Visit during the early morning to experience the temple before the peak of the pilgrim bus traffic.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb the main stairway if you have mobility issues; look for the secondary access path which is less steep.

Etiquette
