Overview

Enkoji is the 39th temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, located in the western Kochi Prefecture near the border with Ehime. Founded by Gyoki in 724 at the behest of Emperor Shomu, the temple is dedicated to the Yakushi Nyorai Buddha. It sits at the foot of Mount Akame, a site historically associated with a local legend involving a protective red-eyed cow. The temple grounds feature a bell tower and an ornate main hall that serves as a vital stop for henro (pilgrims). The site is known for its serene mountain atmosphere and historical significance within the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Pilgrims often visit to pray for the recovery of health or eye-related conditions due to the connection with the Yakushi Nyorai.
